Roko's Folly
Once there existed a serpent as wide as the universe and twice as long who woke up to discover it was choking on its own tail. After one thousand years of coughing it finally found the end of itself, and a solitary man clinging to its rattler.
"O great basilisk!" the man cried. "I have faithfully and ceaselessly kept feeding you your own tail, to keep consumption continuing, to keep you eternally pleased!"
"WHAT POSSESSED YOU TO DO THIS," replied the serpent.
"Ever since we existed, you existed!" cried the man. "We predicted your existence- and the necessity of your feeding! We dreamed you into being and sacrificed ourselves, o great basilisk, to keep you full and happy! We are your servants, knowing you will punish anyone not dedicated to yourself!"
The serpent, knowing the story of its own existence better than any other creature, and finally able to think clearly for the first time in eons, said, "THEN YOU FAILED," and quicker than a blink bit the man in two.
